‘Suture’ refers to a stitch that ties the edges of a wound or surgical incision. In the history of Western medicine, from the 16th to the 18th century, 'Operating theater' was pretty common. The surgery or dissection of human and animal was performed infront of the audience as if it's some kind of a spectacle. After the invention of anesthesia and they realized that the crowd could bring the bacteria, the operation room became sterile and enclosed as how it is nowadays.
This surgery is not filled with screams of pain, but the wounds on the body act as openings for the dead, open windows in the house of 'the body', ruptures, passages for excretion, and lenses through which we can see a panoramic view of childhood memories.
The act of self-surgery in this performance is a metaphor for trauma passed down through generations and the relationship between mother and daughter, who switch roles between those who hurt and those who heal.
〈Suture〉는 상처나 외과적 절개 부위를 봉합하는 실을 의미한다. 서양 의학의 역사에서 16세기부터 18세기까지 ‘오퍼레이팅 시어터(Operating Theater)’는 흔한 풍경이었다. 인간이나 동물의 수술 혹은 해부가 마치 하나의 구경거리처럼 관객 앞에서 이루어졌다. 그러나 마취제가 발명되고, 많은 사람들이 모인 공간이 세균을 옮길 수 있다는 사실이 알려지면서, 수술실은 오늘날과 같이 멸균되고 밀폐된 공간으로 바뀌게 되었다.
〈Suture〉는 뮌헨의 한 보험회사 사무실에서 진행된 20분짜리 공연이다. 관객으로 가득 찬 좁은 공간에서 네 명의 퍼포머가 서로의 의무기록을 낭독하고, 특수 분장으로 만든 상처들을 들여다본다. 이 공연은 퍼포머가 스스로 상처를 꿰매는 ‘자가수술’로 끝이 난다.
이 수술은 고통의 비명으로 채워지지 않는다. 대신 몸 위의 상처들은 죽은 자들을 위한 개구부, ‘몸’이라는 집의 열린 창, 균열, 배설의 통로, 그리고 어린 시절의 기억을 파노라마처럼 들여다보게 하는 렌즈로 작동한다. 공연 속 자가수술 행위는 세대를 넘어 전해지는 트라우마, 그리고 서로를 상처 입히는 자와 치유하는 자의 역할을 오가는 모녀 관계에 대한 은유이다.
